New York Law School has announced a new course on the practical aspects of cyber law according to an article on law.com.
Hmm. Imagine that. Lawyers who know something about technology.
According to the article, the program will offer certificates in such areas as creation of a web site or blog; using AV or graphics tools in electronic presentations; software creation and more. Sounds great, no?
But these are law students. As in soon-to-be lawyers. As a whole, the profession is notoriously techno-phobic.
Law is practically the only profession in the world where computer programs still use DOS as a mainstream format. A recently ordered legal book came with a CD - in WordPerfect - does Corel even still exist as a company? Many attorneys don’t even read their own email (it’s true) because they don’t know how - one attorney I used to work with had his secretary scroll through emails for him and would dictate responses. Lawyers do not like change.
At our firm, we’re a little different. We have our own blog (you’re reading it) and web site. The first version of our web site was created and built by Chris, whose a little more techno-savvy than most attorneys. He is also responsible for our network at the office, which also offers wi-fi. We offer an electronic version of our newsletter and are easily familiar with email, including sending client documents in pdf format, where appropriate.
Even I’ve gotten into the game. I edited the settings on the blog to reflect our color scheme and links. I actually revamped the web site with the new logo and we’re adding some pics of the Erblaw team in the next few weeks. Also on deck is a client extranet and online versions of the newsletter, and possibly a podcast (our office is obsessed with our iPods, Christmas presents for the firm).
The new features and the new look will be courtesy of a real web site designer. We’re so busy, we can only do so much, and we also realize that our technical capabilities are limited (well, at least mine are) to some basic html code.
We’re definitely keeping up with the Joneses - in fact, we think we’re ahead of the curve. As a small law firm, we think we’re one of the most technologically advanced of the bunch. Keep reading for more - and don’t forget to check out Chris’ legal technology blog!
