Twitter To Offer Verified Accounts

by Kelly Phillips Erb on June 12, 2009

Shortly after Facebook announced that it would allow trademark owners to protect their marks on its site, Twitter has announced a beta version of a new feature that it hopes to roll out to offer similar protection.

The feature, called Verified Accounts, will debut this summer. Twitter will check the authenticity of Twitter accounts and offer a “verification seal” for those that have been confirmed. Initially, the feature will be targeted to celebs and government agencies - likely the White House, Ashton Kuchner, Oprah and the like - but should eventually extend to “other well known individuals at risk of impersonation.” Those are likely industry users which have gained notoriety on the site (and in tech circles) like Mashable and Problogger.

Twitter and Facebook are two of the largest social media sites on the internet today. I expect that the entire industry (and beyond) will be watching and taking notes. Don’t be surprised to see other sites follow suit shortly.
