It appears, from talks on the Hill, that John Roberts will, in fact, be sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, replacing former Chief Justice William Rehnquist who passed away this summer.
John Roberts was originally nominated by President Bush to replace outgoing Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who announced her resignation earlier in the year. However, with Rehnquist’s passing, President Bush opted to nominate Roberts to take Rehnquist’s place on the high court.
Roberts’ almost sure confirmation leaves one vacancy when the session begins this fall - Justice O’Connor’s spot remains open. O’Connor has agreed to stay on until a replacement can be found.
