No more Tweeting?

by Erica Intzekostas on July 3, 2009

Twitter has applied to register “Tweet” as a trademark. What I find most interesting about this is that in order to preserve a registration, a trademark can only be used as a proper adjective, as in “Tweet telecommunication services are very popular.” What this means is that if Twitter wants “Tweet” to be a trademark, technically Twitter (and others) should not use Tweet as a verb, as in: “People enjoy tweeting on Twitter” or “I tweeted a lot today”, or as a noun, as in “I receive lots of tweets throughout the day.” Even if Twitter receives its trademark registration for Tweet, it could lose it if it does not police the proper use of “Tweet” as a brand name.
