Apparently, it’s not just me who finds our current system of opt-outs and data sharing more than just a bit awkward. Every year I receive mailings from banks and other institutions outlining their privacy policies and informing me that I may opt-out, often adding that I don’t need to opt-out if I’ve done so already. Problem is, I can never remember whether I’ve opted out or not, and doing so is not always easy or intuitive, as amusingly set forth in this blog post.
It’s particularly interesting to read this here in Europe, where the burden is generally on companies to obtain an opt-in, rather than the other way around. Obviously, each approach has merit, but it may be that Americans are slowly beginning to long for a different balance between convenience and privacy.
