Italy criminalizes Illegal Immigration

by Elisa Jaehner on May 13, 2009

After anti-immigration remarks made by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi created an outcry last week and after the UN has urged Italy to grant asylum to migrants, the Italian parliament passed a new legislation making it a crime to enter or stay in Italy illegally. Although imprisonment is not imposed, an illegal immigrant will face a fine of $6,840 -13,670 under the new measure for an illegal entry or stay.

The new law also imposes a prison sentence for up to three years to anyone who will rent an apartment to illegal immigrants. The legislation still has to pass the Italian senate.
