Never make a hacker angry. This is the lesson that many involved with the successful Pirate Bay prosecution are learning.
Last week, hackers attacked the web site for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, ifpi.org, alleging in response to their actions against Pirate Bay. The site is now functioning properly.
However, over the weekend, hackers allegedly attacked the web site for Monique Wasted, a lawyer with MAQS Law Firm. According to TorrentFreak, a popular blog for filesharing protocol, the site posted this message alerting visitors to the problem: “Our website is currently under attack and we have therefore decided to shut it down until the attack ceases. For further information call Monique Wadsted.”
The site is supposedly back to normal, though I had difficulty accessing the site from the home page. It is incredibly slow.
No one has been named for certain in the attacks. The group, Pirate Party International, denounced the attacks but claims to understand the frustrations that would lead to them.
The group, Anonymous, has organized an effort called “Operation Baylout” which encourages members to jam the fax lines and websites of the IFPI and MAQS. On their Facebook page, the group takes responsibility for the downed sites.
Clearly, the piracy issue is far from settled - the prosecution of Pirate Bay and the response to the prosecution is likely just a harbinger of things to come. Stay tuned!
