Go Daddy 1, uBid Zippo

by Chris Erb on November 13, 2009

Registrar Go Daddy won a significant battle for online businesses when an Illinois court found that it did not have personal jurisdiction over the internet giant. The court based its ruling (in a case brought by uBid) on the fact that Go Daddy had no physical presence in Illinois and had never specifically targeted Illinois residents in its marketing efforts. More importantly, the court decided that the controversial Zippo standard did not apply when determining general jurisdiction over Internet-based companies.

Given that Go Daddy has actually been one of the more aggressive advertisers among online businesses, and likely has a large number of customers in Illinois, the ruling would appear to be a strong blow against those who would sue purely internet-based companies, at least in Illinois.
