Germans upset about second class Swine Flu Vaccine

by Elisa Jaehner on October 21, 2009

Germans are outraged as they learned they’ll receive a different swine flu vaccine than top government officials and the military. Critics say that the “government” vaccine is safer and better. The magazine Der Spiegel reported that Chancellor Angela Merkel, her ministers and other government officials will receive a vaccine produced by Baxter, compared to the vaccine by GlaxoSmithKline that ordinary Germans will receive and that contains an inactive strain of the entire flu virus. The Baxter vaccine contains only fragments of the H1N1 virus.

This sparked a controversy about “Second Class Medicine”, as critics say that the additive in the GlacoSmithKline vaccine could increase the risk of side effects like headaches and fever. The government is trying to defend itself in this PR nightmare, by saying, they had ordered the Baxter vaccine a four months ago and that this has nothing to do with concerns with the safety of the GlaxoSmithKline vaccine.
