The trial against former Deutsche Post Chef Zumwinkel started Friday in Bochum and is expected to last only until this coming Monday. As expected, Zumwinkel confessed that he had evaded taxes in the amount of 996,000 Euros related to inherited funds he had hidden in the Liechtenstein Bank LGT.
The federal intelligence service BND (“Bundesnachrichtendienst”) had obtained evidence about the tax fraud in 2008 by buying data that was stolen from the bank. Zumwinkel was not the only, but the most prominent name that was exposed after the BND bought the stolen DVD with LGT account details for about 4.5 million Euros. Liechtenstein’s representatives were upset by the actions of the federal agency and felt wrongly accused of supporting German tax dodgers. Ambassador Stefan von und zu Liechtenstein talked about a “campaign” against his country Liechtenstein and rejected accusations that Liechtenstein would hinder an agreement with European countries to prevent tax-fraud of wealthy Europeans in Liechtenstein.
As part of the tax evasion fell under the statute of limitations Zumwinkel will not face any jail time.
