Cyber-squatter costs web developer of the Bush Presidential Library $35K

by admin on December 16, 2008

Illuminati Karate, a North Carolina Web development company, bought the domain for the Bush presidential library, www.GeorgeWBushLibrary.com, for the price of $9.99, after the web developers for the library failed to renew it. The cyber-squatters form North Carolina then sold the domain back to Yuma Solutions, the web development company, for $35K. According to the Dallas Morning News, Yuma Solutions were unaware that the domain registration had expired until the paper had reported it. Mark Mills, the owner of Yuma Solutions contacted Illuminati Karate with the offer to buy the domain back and eventually reached a deal for $35K. The agreement is surprising for internet and domain law experts as there are other options to recover the name. One course of action in cases of abusive registration of domain names is to file a complaint under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) with an approved dispute-resolution service provider. The Library Foundation, through Yuma Solutions, had originally purchased the domain from a private citizen for $3000 without realizing that the domain registration was soon to expire.
