Careless blogging could lead to job loss. No, not just from too much blogging and too little working. We all know that blogging on company time, just like any other form of goofing off at work, can lead to a pink slip. But so can blogging on your own time, from your own home computer.
Employers can be very sensitive to their image, and may not want their employees bad-mouthing their company, or presenting themselves in a manner that the employer considers not suitable for the company’s image. More and more employees have found themselves out of jobs because their employers did not approve of their personal, non-work-related blogs.
How can employers get away with acting like Big Brother and punishing employees for what they do one their off hours? Because most employees are at-will, meaning that they can be fired without cause or for any reason other than a protected classification. In other words, an employer can fire an at-will employee based on the employee’s off-duty activities, such as blogging or use of social networking sites.
So before you post that next blog, make sure it is something you wouldn’t mind your employer reading.
