One of the reasons that Chris and I started our own firm was to be able to take on the clients that we wanted and provide the service that we knew we could provide on our own terms. A big part of that, for me, is providing pro bono services to those in need.
A little background… I don’t come from lawyer parents. I didn’t know any lawyers growing up. I hail from modest means in a tiny town down South. And although it sounds like a cliche, I really did go to law school with the hope that I could make a difference. And I have.
I volunteer with a number of legal aid organizations, which allows me to provide deserving clients with high caliber legal representation - for free. It’s a great feeling.
This month, I was recognized twice for my contributions. And in the past, I kind of kept that stuff quiet because it seemed to fly in the face of volunteering for the sake of volunteering if you then tell everybody about it. But this month, when I posted my note about PVLA, a friend of mine sent me an email asking how she could get involved, too. And I starting thinking that it’s a good thing to let others know that I volunteer, that it is fun and worthwhile and that I do enjoy it.
So, here I go at the risk of sounding pompous… I got a little mention this summer as a new volunteer with Philadelphia Law Works, which works in conjunction with Philly VIP. I am doing some “tangled title work” for them, which for me involves straightening out some estate administration issues with respect to distribution. I was also recognized for my work with Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts as one of their Volunteers of the Year for 2005. Thanks for the kudos, guys, I appreciate it.
