Anonymous Commentator’s Identity Revealed by Court Order

by admin on November 10, 2009

A judge ruled that the identity of an anonymous commentator, called “Hipcheck 16″, who commented on an article at the Daily Herald website, a suburban Chicago newspaper, will be unmasked.

Hipcheck 16 posted comments about Lisa Stone, a trustee of Buffalo Grove in suburban Chicago and her 15-year-old son. These comments that the mother calls “deeply disturbing” had been posted on April 9 to an article on the Daily Herald’s website about the election in which Lisa Stone won a seat. After Stone’s son had responded to comments made by Hipcheck 16 about his mother, he asked the commentator to reveal his identity and to talk in person. The anonymous man then posted a comment that implied sexual accounters the boy might have had in the past with strangers whom he had met online and then went on to more discriminating remarks about the boy’s mother.

Lisa Stone seeks the identity of the commentator to decide if she wants to sue the man or not. Circuit Judge Jeffrey Lawrence ordered on Monday that the identity be turned over to Stone.
