A promise unfulfilled …

by Chris Erb on June 30, 2005

Some time ago, I posted a message which was of interest to many German citizens living in the United States who wanted to become US citizens. Under certain circumstances, provided approval was sought in advance, a German citizen could retain his or her German citizenship even after becoming a US citizen. The promise was that Germans who, for professional or personal reasons, had a good reason to become US citizens, could do so based on a relatively straightforward application process.
Unfortunately, the reality appears to be somewhat different. The general consensus seems to be that the German government has been extremely reluctant to grant such requests. Nonetheless, we still receive a number of inquiries about this process because many German nationals want to retain their connection to Germany while enjoying the rights (and obligations) or US citizenship.
I would welcome those with personal experiences in this area - whether as an attorney or an applicant - to comment below.
